Ask any Dota 2 coach what a pos 4 should be doing in the early game and stacking camps will appear on almost every list. It’s efficient, it accelerates core farm, it’s unambiguously good.
Our dataset of 403 professional matches disagrees — at least at high stack counts.
The Numbers That Shouldn’t Exist
| Camps Stacked | Win Rate | n |
|---|---|---|
| Any | 50.0% | 398 |
| 2+ | 49.1% | 226 |
| 4+ | 43.3% | 134 |
| 5+ | 40.2% | 97 |
| 6+ | 42.0% | 69 |
At any camp stacking: 50% — baseline. At 4+: 43.3%. At 5+: 40.2%. The more camps a pos 4 stacks, the more likely their team is losing. This is not a sample size artifact.
Three Explanations
- Losing teams stack more. When your team is losing map control, the jungle is one of the few safe places for a pos 4 to operate. High stack counts may reflect a team that’s been pushed off the map, not a team that’s farming efficiently.
- Stacking replaces higher-value plays. Every minute spent stacking is a minute not spent rotating for kills, contesting vision, or creating space. In a close game, those trade-offs matter.
- Meta-specific factors. Patch 7.41 may have changed stack efficiency or hero priorities in ways that shift the value of stacking relative to other pos 4 activities.
What Winning Pos 4 Does Instead
The winning pos 4 records in our dataset are characterized by rotations for kills, active vision contestation, space creation, rune control facilitation, and aggressive dewarding. The ward kills data tells the same story from a different angle — what you contest matters more than what you accumulate.
The Honest Self-Check
Ask yourself: why are you stacking?
Strategic farm acceleration at 4 and 7 minutes for your carry = good. One or two stacks timed to power item timing = good. Stacking at minute 15 because you don’t know what else to do and the map feels unsafe = losing pattern.
Practical Takeaways
- Max 2 strategic stacks per game — timed to your carry’s item timing windows.
- Spend remaining pos 4 time on rotations, aggressive vision, and kill setups.
- If you’re stacking more than 4 camps, ask why. Is it strategic or are you hiding?
